After a busy week of hard work, and a few late nights, the students finally arrived at presentation day. This morning, the mood was eerily calm. The scholars were confident in their preparation, and used the morning to touch up some final parts of their presentations and breathe before the moment arrived. Each of the four groups passed the hours differently; however, they all took the opportunity to meet with their mentors one last time.
At 2:00 pm, the presentations officially began with the Atmosphere group. While many might have expected the students to be nervous, Atmosphere brought a positive energy to the room, setting the tone for the following three groups. The Biosphere, Hydrosphere, and Lithosphere groups all met the exceptional standard set by the Atmosphere group. After the presentations, the panel to which the scholars presented shared that they were impressed by the students’ work and proud to see how far the class had come in just a few short days. One of the mentors went so far as to say that the presentations were some of the best he had ever seen from an educational program like VESSS. |
After the plenary presentation, students had a chance to ask their interns about college. The VESSS class is split evenly between students who will be attending college in the fall, and some who are just starting to think about application season. The scholars were eager to ask about what classes are like, how to balance their academics with their extracurricular involvements, and what it was like transitioning from high school to college.
Friday, the students will participate in the first ever VESSS Summer Academy Closing Ceremony! We look forward to sharing the scholars’ accomplishments with the parents, mentors, and NASA scientists and engineers in attendance.
